LED backlight is a new technology that converts elctrical energy directly into light, producing a dramatic improvement in colour and contrast.  Samsung LED replaces ordinary flourecent backlights with multiple LEDs, arranged around the outer edge of the screen, that can brighten, dim or turn off all together depending on the picture.  This gives you deeper authentic blacks and greater subtlety of colour gradiation.
