Get set for digital - Your guide to the digital switchover

Over the next few months the standard analogue TV signal will slowly be switched off as part of Government policy. At the moment households in many areas of the UK are unable to receive Freeview services, but by switching off the existing analogue system the coverage of the digital signal will extend to the entire country.

Not only will this ensure that the UK keeps pace with other countries around the world, it'll also free up the airwaves for new services like ultra-fast broadband and mobile television. There's no need to worry, switching is simple!

What will I need?

What better opportunity to begin experiencing the benefits of digital TV right now, than with a new machine taking you into the new era of broadcasting? Digital TV offers countless advantages over its analogue counterpart, giving you a far greater choice of channels, new levels of interactivity and a much-improved picture. All viewers who receive Freeview services will get around 15 channels with most receiving more than 40 channels depending on where they live.

In the last 6 months alone, 4.4 million new digital TVs have been sold as people prepare for the switchover. Whether you want a brand-new entertainment centrepiece for your living room or a compact portable to act as a second TV we've got something to suit you. With one of our TVs you can be assured that the digital transition won't leave you drawing a blank. You can check out our huge range of digital TVs here.

Can I go digital with my current TV?

YES - If you are watching Sky TV, Virgin media or Freesat then you will not be affected. If you are watching via Freeview, BT Vision or Top-up TV then you will need to re-tune your digital TV or box at stage 1 and 2.

No - If you are still watching analogue television and haven't yet got any digital equipment when switchover happens.

If you don't want a new TV, there are some other options available too. Whilst it's likely that you've already been introduced to Freeview, you may not have heard of the latest progression, Freesat. This is a non-subscription service similar to Freeview which allows you to receive fantastic HD programming through a satellite dish, without having to pay the sometimes hefty fees of subscription TV. Some of our TVs come with Freesat built-in making installation much easier; you can find out which ones here.

Alongside the new Freesat service are Freesat recorders, which work in a similar way to Sky+ but for a fraction of the price. With a Freesat recorder you can record and store all of your favourite programs in stunning HD. You won't have to worry about missing programs that clash either, as you can record two programmes simultaneously. If one of you wants to watch the football and the other Coronation Street then a Freesat recorder can end all the arguments. To check out some of our great offers on Freesat recorders, click here.

When is the switchover happening in my area?

Whilst the switchover will eventually happen across the entire UK, the actual switch will be gradual. When exactly you experience the switchover will depend on where in the UK you live. If you live in the Border region then you'll already have switched entirely to digital TV, and the process will continue right up until 2012.
